I remember the day I visited the original Seventh Day Adventist Church (Millerites) in Washington, NH that was in the process of being renovated by the elder members of the church. An elder from Vermont was at the site that day, and I struck up a conversation with her. During that conversation she happened to mention that she was still confused at the sight of the two entrances in the front of the structure. I then explained to her that men and women were separated during the services and not allowed to enter or sit together during church sermons. This church was built during the early 1840s when the Christians of New England lived according to strict rules determined by the God of the Hebrews. These rules had to be strictly followed for God's blessings to continue upon their society.
In colonial America censorship was handled by Protestant church ministers who dutifully protected their flocks from the evil temptations of Satan. In the year 1800 the now popular holiday of Christmas was not celebrated in America. The Christmas holiday was only celebrated by the Catholics of Europe who violated biblical law by worshipping a fir tree decorated with silver and gold (Jer. 10:2-5). America's Christians wouldn't even think of celebrating such a pagan holiday as Christmas.
Most people born after the year 1960 never got to experience the censors who controlled Christian society in America. When television advanced the communications influencing the American culture of the 1950s, censors were assigned to oversee what the television script writers could present to the public in order to maintain the integrity of America's strict Christian culture. Temptations of a sexual nature were considered to be a particular problem since Satan often used sex as a method of tempting Christians to commit sin. Censors were very careful to remove all sexual content scheduled to be shown on television. Censors would not even allow a double bed to be displayed on a television screen in America.
In the year 1960 however, America decided to elect a young Irish Catholic senator from Massachusetts to the White House. Soon the focus of American culture changed from religion to science. The 1960s witnessed the end of the "Blue Laws" that kept stores and businesses closed on Sundays so people could attend church, and also an end to prayer in public schools. The censors who once monitored what American children could view on TV now suddenly found themselves out of work, as America's moral standards underwent radical change. Science dictated that it was not possible for mankind to breach the bonds of time to foresee events of the future, thus turning Christian Bibles into books of fiction. Now America's censors have been long forgotten, as the doctrines of God have been replaced by the laws of men (Matthew 15:9).
