Many Nostradamus books were published containing poor translations, and often deliberately falsified interpretations, of his quatrains. Some books were written that became best sellers, and reaped great profits for their authors. These false prophecies failed to come true and resulted in Nostradamus being labeled a fraud in a world filled with many such deceptions. But did we make a mistake by ignoring the warnings of Nostradamus?
NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-8
There will be loosed instantaneous fire, death contained
Sera laisse le feu vif, mort cache
Within cylinders of dreadful horror;

During the night, a classical city is pounded to dust,

Quatrain #5-8: Dresden was a hospital city and a European center for the arts and sciences, but during a Mardi Gras celebration in 1945 the city was saturation bombed with 60,000 incendiary bombs (1 for every 2 people in the city) and an additional 5 megatons of high explosives. Unlike the victims of Hiroshima, who never knew what hit them, the citizens of Dresden were slowly incinerated to death. Women were running through the streets with babies in their arms and their hair on fire as they burned to death. Churchill's bombing of Dresden was the largest one day holocaust in the history of warfare. The German people paid dearly for Hitler's decision to bomb London.

Near Lake Geneva they'll be led

By a prostitute, to a strange city, desiring to deceive;

Quatrain #5-12: In this quatrain Nostradamus tells us about the infamous German spy and prostitute, Mata Hari, who learned of French plans for the Battle of Somme while attending a party in Geneva. She informed the Germans, who sent their forces from Augsburg to acheive the greatest one day slaughter of French soldiers in history. The double agent Mata Hari was eventually tried and executed for her acts of espionage.

Quatrain #5-28: Nostradamus describes the murder of the Duke de Guise of Genoa. When King Henry III discovers that the Catholics have been poisoning his family's food, he orders the death of his Catholic rival for the French throne. The Duke de Guise is invited to Blois and stabbed to death by three hired assassins.

Freedom shall not be recovered,

They will be occupied by a dark, fierce, iniquitous villain;

When the edicts of the pontiff will be overruled

Quatrain #5-29: This is another example of a Nostradamus word play on the name of Adolph Hitler. Nostradamus combines the two words, "Hitler" and "Ister", providing us with both Hitler's name and place of origin (Ister was the Latin name for the Danube). Hitler and Mussolini will agree to turn Italy into a Facist Republic, thereby nullifying the power of the Pope.

The leaders of the city are rebelling,

Who will greatly wish to recover their freedom;

A slashing of the males, an unfortunate melee,

Quatrain #5-33: The Massacre at Wassey, France on March 1st, 1562 occurred when the Duke of Guise ordered his troops to break up a Protestant worship service being held in a barn. The Duke was struck by a rock thrown by one of the worshippers, and ordered his troops to cut down all the male members of the gathering. When news of the massacre of 63 unarmed men reached Nantes, it helped to fuel the spirit of resistance that led to the French Wars of Religion.

That great monarch who shall succeed (another) by death,

Quatrain #5-38: In the long history of Europe, no monarch ever gave in to more excess than King Louis XVI of France. Under his reign there was nothing that the king and his queen, Marie Antoinette, could not possess. French royalty lived in the lap of luxury as the commoners starved to death. The alleged "Let them eat cake!" remark by Marie Antoinette probably never took place, but it was representative of the feelings of the French people toward their monarchs.

Quatrain #5-44: Ottoman pirates run rampant on the Mediterranean Sea. Their actions serve only to increase tensions between the Catholic Church and the Ottoman Empire. The Barbary Coast pirates are not part of the Ottoman fleet, but operate with the tacit approval of the Ottomans. The Pope of Rome decides to double his army and navy to deal with the problem.

Quatrain #5-57: This is another example of Nostradamus using real names in his prophecies. In this poem he names Montgolfier, inventor of the hot air balloon, who used his balloon to spy upon enemy movements during the Battle of Fleurus in Belgium on June 26, 1794. The French won a great victory over the Austrians and were able to sack the booty of local churches to finance Napoleon's wars. Pope Pius VI was eventually arrested by Napoleon and died in custody.

Quatrain #5-72: After King Henry II died in a jousting match in 1559 the pope tried to declare the Duke de Guise legal inheritor of the French throne, but after the people elected Henry's young son Francis II as king, the pope decided to issue a papal (immaculate) edict to capture the throne of France. Two Dominicans were sent to France to work in the royal kitchens and poison the king's food. At the tender age of 16, Francis succumbed to the poisoning, and no one suspected that he had been poisoned, since he was always viewed as a sickly child.

Quatrain #5-92: In the blissful economic era of the 1920's, Pope Pius XI held the papacy for 17 years. Five more papal terms bring us to another prosperous time during the 1970's and the election of Pope John Paul II, who was not an Italian, and not popularly supported by his bishops, who often issued opinions that opposed his own. Many Catholics began to demand rights to abortion, women in the priesthood, and a host of other liberal changes in the Church, but John Paul II was a traditionalist, and refused to allow any changes in Church doctrine.

Quatrain #5-98: The cities of Bearn and Bigorre in the high Pyrenees mountains of southwestern France suffer from "fiery skies" in the 3rd week of July (the end of Cancer) as large northern cities, like Paris and Seattle, report record-breaking temperatures and severe drought conditions in spite of their extreme northern locations at the 48th parallel. Millions of dead fish lie strewn on ocean beaches and lakeshores, as high water temperatures lower oxygen levels. Global Warming results in confusion, as carbon emissions are mistakenly blamed for the problem. Scientists aren't aware of this natural 1200-year cycle of "global warming" and cooling that has been going on for many thousands of years. Unfortunately massive deforestation and electric power plants built along major rivers have acted together to worsen the problem.
