Our Lady of Fatima

In the year 1917 a very unusual event occurred in Portugal that would affect the lives of the world's Catholics for the next century.  In the tiny town of Fatima, Portugal, three young shepherd children witnessed the appearance of an angel who told them that the present war (WWI) would soon be over, but that a second and more terrible war (WWII) would occur sometime in the future.  The angel lamented to the children that the people of the Earth were not obeying God's laws, and must therefore suffer God's vengeance in the form of another worldwide war.

Further visions occurred on the 13th of each month, and by October over 50,000 people had gathered in Fatima to witness the apparitions.  A total of three secrets were imparted to the children about future world events.  The First Secret of "Our Lady" described the coming of WWII.  The Second Secret of Fatima predicted a future conversion of Russia from Communism, and the Third Secret of Fatima was locked in the Vatican vaults and not scheduled to be released to Catholics until the year 1960 when the pope would review it.  Two of the children later died, leaving only Lucia Marto to record the Third Secret of Fatima:

"And we saw an immense light that is God, something similar to how people look in a mirror when they pass in front of it, a bishop dressed in white (we had the impression it was the holy father), other bishops, priests, men and women religious, going up a steep hill, at the top of which was a big cross with a rough hewn trunk, like a cork tree with the bark.  Before reaching there, the Holy father passed through a big city half in ruins (Rome?).  Half trembling, in halting steps afflicted by pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he passed along the way.  Having reached the top of the hill, on his knees at the foot of the big cross, he was killed by a group of soldiers who shot bullets at him..."

When Pope John XXIII opened and read the Third Secret in 1960, he was so frightened by its contents that he exclaimed "This is not me!" and refused to release it to the public.  In 2000 it was finally decided by Pope John Paul II and Lucia Marto that it was now time to release the Third Secret of Fatima.  The Pope also released a statement that he felt the prophecy to be a "figurative representation" of the attempt on his life in 1981.  It should be noted however, that the other two Fatima secrets were not figurative in nature and that the Third Secret of Fatima is very similar to the other frightening prophecies made by Saint Malachy and the prophet Nostradamus that also concern the fate of Rome and its papacy.  Could it be that all these prophecies are describing the very same event?
